Gibbs-Ringing Artifact Removal Based on Local Subvoxel-shifts

چکیده
PURPOSE To develop a fast and stable method for correcting the gibbs-ringing artifact. METHODS Gibbs-ringing is a well-known artifact which manifests itself as spurious oscillations in the vicinity of sharp image gradients at tissue boundaries. The origin can be seen in the truncation of k-space during MRI data-acquisition. Correction techniques like Gegenbauer reconstruction or extrapolation methods aim at recovering these missing data. Here, we present a simple and robust method which exploits a different view on the Gibbs-phenomenon: The truncation in k-space can be interpreted as a convolution of the underlying image with a sinc-function. As the image is reconstructed on a discretized grid, the severity of the ringing artifacts depends on how this grid is located with respect to the edge and the oscillation pattern of the function. We propose to reinterpolate the image based on local, subvoxel-shifts to sample the ringing pattern at the zero-crossings of the oscillating sinc-function. RESULTS With the proposed method, the artifact can simply, effectively, and robustly be removed with a minimal amount of image smoothing. CONCLUSIONS The robustness of the method suggests it as a suitable candidate for an implementation in the standard image processing pipeline in clinical routine. Ringing Artifact Removal in Digital Restored Images Using Multi- Resolution Edge Map
This paper presents a novel approach to reducing ringing artifact in digitally restored images by using multi-resolution edge map. The performance of reducing ringing artifacts depends on the accurate classification of the local features in the image. The discrete wavelet transform (DWT) provides effective insight into both spatial and frequency characteristics of an image. Through the DWT anal...
متن کاملVariability of myocardial perfusion dark rim Gibbs artifacts due to sub-pixel shifts
BACKGROUND Gibbs ringing has been shown as a possible source of dark rim artifacts in myocardial perfusion studies. This type of artifact is usually described as transient, lasting a few heart beats, and localised in random segments of the myocardial wall. Dark rim artifacts are known to be unpredictably variable. This article aims to illustrate that a sub-pixel shift, i.e. a small displacement...
متن کاملGegenbauer High Resolution Reconstruction of Magnetic Resonance Imaging
A variety of image artifacts are routinely observed on MRI images. We concentrate on the Gibbs Ringing that manifests itself as bright or dark rings seen at the borders of abrupt intensity change on the images. Gegenbauer High Resolution Reconstruction method has been previously shown to eliminate the undesirable ringing at the jump discontinuities in MRI. Prior work concentrated on applying th...
متن کاملMaximum Likelihood Parameter Estimation for Image Ringing Artifact Removal
At low bit rates, image compression codecs based on overlapping transforms introduce spurious oscillations known as ringing artifacts in the vicinity of major edges. Unlike previous works, we present a maximum-likelihood approach to the ringingartifact removal problem. Our approach employs a parameter-estimation method based on the -means algorithm with the number of clusters determined by a cl...
متن کاملWavelet transform domain filters: a spatially selective noise filtration technique
Wavelet transforms are multiresolution decompositions that can be used to analyze signals and images. They describe a signal by the power at each scale and position. Edges can be located very effectively in the wavelet transform domain. A spatially selective noise filtration technique based on the direct spatial correlation of the wavelet transform at several adjacent scales is introduced. A hi...
